Cervical Cancer Screening & Vaccination

Cervical cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among women in Hong Kong, is a cancer in the cervix, which is at the lower part of the uterus (womb). Almost all cervical cancers are caused by persistent infection with one of the cancer-causing (or high-risk) human papillomavirus (HPV) types.

Some types of HPV can cause premalignant changes and malignant cancers of cervix. Regular cervical screening and timely treatment of the detected pre-cancerous changes can prevent cervical cancer.

In general, once a person is infected by HPV, cervical intraepithelial squamous cell will change into a cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN1), two (CIN2) and three (CIN3), and finally become cervical cancer.

Cervical Screening (Pap smear)

Receiving vaccination of Gardasil 9 can protect people against diseases caused by 9 types of Human Papillomavirus (HPV), but not prevent the cervical cancer & related diseases caused by the other types of HPV. Women who ever had sexual experience should have regular cervical screening (pap smear) to prevent cervical cancer or related diseases.

Cervical screening is a quick and simple test for detecting early abnormal changes in the cervix. Women aged 25 to 64 who ever had sexual experience should have regular cervical screening, cytology every 3 years after two consecutive normal annual screenings.
